A Christmas Carol in the City of London
Yule walk: London Past, Present & Yet to Come
Service Description
From some of the five star reviews on Tripadvisor for this walk: "...an excellent guide who took good care of us. He effortlessly shepherded a large group through crowded places, making sure everyone kept together and could hear his entertaining stories." ***** “Super... enjoyed equally by my mother, my wife and two of our children." ***** "...an entertaining and informative guide and I learnt lots of interesting facts... Highly recommended!” ***** "A perfect treat between Christmas and the New Year." ***** “Fascinating and varied" ***** 'A Christmas Carol' is one of Charles Dickens' most popular stories, telling of Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from miserly curmudgeon into an avuncular figure who 'knew how to keep Christmas well'. Dickens set the novel mainly in the Victorian City of London. He did not give exact street names, but we can deduce which streets, alleys and courts he may have had in mind. Most of them are still there today, over 180 years later. Mainly following the trail of Scrooge, this walk will also cover other Yuletide themes and include one or two seasonal surprises. • See where Scrooge worked, lived, ate and was buried in 'A Christmas Carol'. • Learn how the book influenced Christmas today. • Discover the origins of some of our Christmas traditions. • Hear about the historical figure that inspired panto favourite Dick Whittington. Afterwards, please join me for a drink in a pub near Leadenhall Market (not included in the ticket price!). Start: Outside St Paul's tube (Exit 2, to St Paul's Cathedral), London EC2V 6AA Finish: Leadenhall Market (nearest tubes: Bank, Monument). The walk will take place come rain or shine, so please be prepared for all weathers! "Wonderful walk, wonderful company! Will definitely make this an annual ritual!" “Another masterpiece! ... brilliant.” “...fantastic... insightful, entertaining and full of festive charm." "...brought the Victorian City to life as Dickens would have known it." "we learnt a lot about Charles Dickens and English Christmas traditions." "...wonderful well researched walk." "...fascinating and insightful... with lots of lovely quotes." "...perfect Twixtmas outing." "Fantastic." “...wonderful… A perfect start to our Christmas.” **Please note that payment must be made online before the walk and that no refunds will be given for cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled start time.** Click on the 'Book Now' button and find the next available date for this walk.
